Using Webmaster Tools

Both Google and Bing offer free webmaster tools which help you optimise your site and understand how well it performs in searches.

Although Google is still dominant in search, Bing and Yahoo are growing their market share. The Bing webmaster tools also apply to Yahoo, so by registering with both Google and Bing webmaster tools you are likely to cover over 95% of searches.

Both services allow you to register and submit sitemaps, see any indexing errors, and highlight improvements that could be made to the search engine optimisation of your site. You can also see which search terms people used to find your site, and whereabouts you appeared in the search results for each search phrase.

Another useful feature of both services lets you see which other sites are linking to yours, and which pages they are linking to.

If you use a non-geographic domain for your site (like .com or .net), rather than a country-specific domain (like .co.uk), then Google will also give you the option to specify that the site is targeted to a UK audience (or another country of your choice). This may boost the search engine performance in that country (but reduce it in other countries).

The Google webmaster tools complement the Google Analytics tools, but perform a different function. Webmaster tools are designed for search engine optimisation, whereas web analytics tools provide valuable data about the people who are visiting your site.
